General Information of Cultural Tourism in Gannan Prefecture
Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is one of the ten Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures in China. Lying to the northeast of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and southwest of Gansu Province, the prefecture is located at the junction of Gansu, Qinghai and Sichuan provinces. As the intersection of Tibetan and Chinese cultures and the water conservation and supply area of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, it is called "the window of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau" and "the springboard for Tibetan modernization" by Fei Xiaotong. It is defined as the Main Ecological Function Zone, the Demonstration Zone of Ecological Civilization and the Demonstration Zone of Tourism by the central government. The prefecture covers an area of 45,000 square kilometers with altitudes of 1,100 to 4,900 meters, mostly over 3,000 meters. It is divided into three natural types. In the southern part of the prefecture lies the Min-Die Mountains, with great mountains, deep ditches and mild climate. It is one of the important forest areas in the province. The eastern part is covered by hills and mountainous, cold and wet, where the residents work on farming, forestry and husbandry; the northwest is a vast meadow and grassland and the main pastoral areas of the province. The altitude of the city is 2,960 meters, with the average temperature 1.7 ℃, and there is no absolute frost-free period.
Established in 1953, the Autonomous Prefecture has jurisdiction over Xiahe, Maqu, Luqu, Zhuoni, Diebu, Lintan, Zhouqu County, Hezuo city, 99 townships (towns, subdistrict offices) and 664 administrative villages. There are 24 ethnic groups in the prefecture, including Tibetans, Hans, Huis and Mongolians, with a total population of 730,700, of which Tibetans account for 53.9 percent.
Gannan is an important node along the Ancient Tangbo Road of the ancient Silk Road and is the closest snow plateau to the inland with its beautiful natural scenery, ethnical variety and unique customs. There spread over 40 national tourist attractions, scenic spots and geological parks including Gahai-Zecha National Nature Reserve, Yeliguan National Forest Park, Zagana, Sangke Grassland, the first bend of the Yellow River, Dayugou Ditch, Laga Mountain, Dangzhou Grassland. A total of 123 Tibetan Buddhist temples, including Labrang Temple, Zen Temple and Langmu Temple. In addition, there are more than 20 historical sites such as Lazikou Pass, E'jie Conference Site and Ganga Bajiao City and dozens of folk festivals such as the Xianglang Festival, the Sho Dun Festival, the Flower Festival, the Hua'er Folksong Festival and the Arrow Insertion Festival. Gannan has successively won the titles of "The Most Charming Scenic Spot in The West ," one of the "50 Outdoor Paradises in The World Where Life Is Free," " 50 Dream Places to Visit in One's Life," "The Most Ethnically Diverse Tourist Destination in China," "The Best National Tourist Attraction" and "The Most Beautiful Ecological Low-Carbon Tourist Destination in China." The natural grassland in the whole prefecture covers an area of 40.84 million mu, which is the best natural pasture in Asia and one of the "Five Great Pastoral Areas" in China. The total forest area is 25.8 million mu, accounting for 45% of the total forest areas in Gansu Province. It is one of the nine key forest areas in China. With its green vegetation coverage rate over 94%, there reside 850 precious Chinese and Tibetan herbal medicine such as Cordyceps sinensis, Rhodiola rosea, Saussurea involucrata and wild treasures such as landu fungi, agaric and fiddlehead ferns. It has the most intact, primitive and representative alpine marsh in the world, covering an area of 8.01 million mu, and is praised as "the kidney of the Yellow River" and "the Chinese Water Tower." There are also many rivers, the Yellow River, the Bailong River, the Tao River and the Daxia River and their more than 120 tributaries running across the whole prefecture. The Yellow River winds and twists 433 kilometers in the territory, offering 10.8 billion cubic meters water, accounting for 58.7% of the total runoff in the head regions of the Yellow River. The annual runoff volume of the Bailong River, a secondary tributary of the Yangtze River, accounts for 60% of the total runoff volume of Jialing River. Gannan is rich in underground mineral reserves, with 270 proved mineral deposits, 14 of which rank among the top five in the province, and the top gold output.
In recent years, with the cordial care of the CPC Central Committee and the strong leadership of the provincial party committees and governments, the prefecture committee and its government have earnestly implemented General Secretary Xi Jinping's strategic thinking. According to president Xi, it is a prerequisite for the national governance to rule the borderland. It is also a prerequisite for the borderland to stabilize Tibet. The committees and governments fully implement the central government's important principles of “Rule Tibet in line with law, develop Tibet by enriching the people, construct Tibet in the long term, unite the people and consolidate the foundation.” They also stay committed to the underlying principle of pursing progress while maintaining stable, work to transform the way of development, adjust the structure, enhance the foundation, develop the industry, transfer the function, and increase vitality. Efforts are made in law-governance, long-term effect, responsibility boundary and regulation enforcement to coordinate the Five Integrated Plan as well as all the affairs of the Party. The whole prefecture has shown a prosperous picture of social harmony and stability, stable economic development, orderly progress in reform, sustainable improvement in people's livelihood, progress in national unity, religious harmony, and political style of working.
